Armatherm application

Armatherm™ FRR

Masonry Shelf Angle

Masonry veneer walls need tie-backs and a masonry shelf angle, which can create significant thermal bridges and reduce a wall’s R-value by up to 50%, making energy code compliance more challenging. Shelf angles transfer the weight of the masonry to the building’s structural steel or concrete slab edge, breaking the continuity of wall insulation and creating a linear thermal bridge.

To enhance the U-value of a masonry wall assembly, the shelf angle can be attached to the structure at discrete, evenly spaced points such as plate “blades,” allowing insulation to extend behind the steel angle and reducing the impact of a continuous thermal bridge. Extending the shelf angle outward, however, requires larger geometries and additional material to support the cantilevered load.

Wall assembly with Armatherm material improving thermal efficiency

Improving Wall Assembly Efficiency

Alternatively, Armatherm™ FRR structural thermal break material can be installed directly behind the masonry shelf angle as part of the insulation layer. This thermal break greatly lowers the linear transmittance of the shelf angle connection. Rigid metal flashing used for waterproofing can also be replaced with a non-conductive, self-adhered membrane to further reduce thermal bridging.
